Dr. Ortega graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Valencia in 1980 with the Outstanding Graduate Special Prize, and was subsequently honored with the first prize for national graduates terminating their studies in medicine. After obtaining a fellowship in the Colegio de los Españoles in Bologna (Italy) by national merit-based competition, he obtained his doctorate from the same university in 1983 with cum laude honors. Publication of the work corresponding to his doctoral thesis was awarded with the first prize for research from the Spanish Digestive System Society.
He developed his healthcare work at the Hospital Clínico Universitario in Valencia, focusing on endocrine and morbid obesity surgery, managing the center where this work takes place for the last 20 years. He was a key member on the Directive Boards of the Spanish Societies of Endocrine Surgery and Obesity Surgery, and has been the President of the National Conferences for both surgical subspecialties. He is currently the Chairman of the General Surgery and Digestive Medicine Service at the Hospital Clínico Universitario in Valencia.
His teaching work began while he was studying his specialty, and he is now an Associate Professor at the Surgery Department of the University of Valencia where he has also led various postgraduate courses and master’s degrees. He has also been visiting Professor at the University of Virginia, USA, Vice-dean of the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Valencia, and Director of the Hospital Clínico Universitario in Valencia.
His research work has spanned the different fields of surgery, although they coincide with his healthcare work, focusing mainly on endocrine surgery with lines of investigation in hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism and obesity surgery, including research on the effects of bariatric surgery on metabolism and the comorbidities of morbidly obese individuals. He has more than 150 scientific publications, has presented over 200 lectures and communications at scientific conferences, has led 20 doctoral theses, and is a part of the Editorial Board of several international surgical journals.
