Dr. Servera graduated in Medicine from the University of Valencia in 1976 and obtained his Ph.D. along with the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Special Prize.
He completed his residency at the Hospital Clínico in Valencia, and thanks to a scholarship from the French Government, he completed his pre-doctoral training with a stay at the INSERM (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale) Respiratory Physiopathology Research Unit and at the Respiratory Insufficiency Service at the University Teaching Hospital in Nancy, France, both directed by Prof. P Sadoul. He obtained his degree in Respiratory Physiopathology from the University of Nancy in 1983. Subsequently, he worked in Lyon, France, and in New Jersey, USA, in fields related to home-based respiratory support. He is now the Chairman of the Pneumology Service at the Hospital Clínico Universitario in Valencia.
He has taught Respiratory Pathology at the University of Valencia in the Faculty of Physiotherapy since its foundation, and he is a permanent Senior Professor at the university.
His research focuses on Respiratory Insufficiency, mainly in respiratory rehabilitation and non-invasive or tracheal mechanical ventilation. His publications describing respiratory problems in neuromuscular diseases are regularly cited in international clinical practice guides and form part of national and international expert committee recommendations in this area. The Respiratory Care Unit in the Hospital Clínico Universitario Pneumology Service he leads is pioneering in Spain and is certified as a Unit of Excellence.
