Presentation

Dr. Juan R. Viña holds a degree and a doctorate in Medicine and Surgery, and currently serves as a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Valencia. He was one of the founders and the General Director of the Fundación del Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria-INCLIVA from 2000 to 2012. His international research career includes stays at the Metabolic Research Laboratory of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford as a doctoral student, at the Department of Anesthesia’s Neurochemistry Laboratory at Hershey Medical Center (USA) as an Assistant Professor, and at the Department of Physiology at The Chicago Medical School as a Visiting Research Professor. He has published more than 110 articles in high-impact international journals and has led more than 30 scientific projects funded through competitive grants as the principal investigator. He holds six research periods (sexenios) and has supervised fifteen doctoral theses. Among his awards are the García-Blanco Medal in 1981 and the DANONE Award for Scientific Career in Food and Nutrition “Dr. Carles Martí Henneberg” in 2011. He is a Full Member and General Secretary of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Valencian Community (RAMCV), and a Full Member of the Academy of Pharmacy of the Valencian Community. Additionally, he chairs the External Scientific Committee of the Bio-Vizcaya Research Institute and the Cañada-Blanch Foundation, and is a Fellow of the ASPEN Institute in Spain. He is currently a member of the boards of the Spanish Renal Foundation (FRIAT), the BANCAJA Foundation, and the Anglo-Spanish Cultural Foundation, and was also a member of the board of the ADEIT Foundation from 1997 to 2017.
