Presentation
Dr. Cervantes is Professor of Medicine at the University of Valencia and Head of the Medical Oncology Department at Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia. After completing his specialist training, he worked in the cellular pharmacology laboratory of the Free University Hospital in Amsterdam, where he obtained his PhD Degree with a research on multidrug resistance in solid tumors.
He is also director of the Cancer Area at the Biomedical Research Institute – INCLIVA. His main areas of interest and research are gastrointestinal cancer, as well as Phase I trials and development of new drugs and new experimental therapeutics. He is a clinical researcher in rectal cancer, a topic in which he has developed several publications on the quality of multidisciplinary work, as well as the assessment of the quality of mesorectal surgery, how to optimize the ideal choice of initial therapy and, especially, how to treat cancer of the upper third of the rectum.
He has colaborated in international clinical guidelines and is co-author of international cooperative studies that have changed clinical practice. His current main topic of work is on the detection and analysis of minimal residual disease in resected colon cancer with curative intent by detection of circulating tumor DNA in plasma.
He is an author of more than 600 articles and reviews published in different international journals. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the journal Cancer Treatment Reviews and Associate Editor of the gastrointestinal cancer section in Annals of Oncology. He is currently President of ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology), for the period 2023-2024. Since 2017 he is Scientific Director of INCLIVA.
