Dr. Miguel Ángel García Pérez
Principal Investigator
Research Group on Genetics of Osteoporosis
Presentation
Dr. Miguel Ángel García Pérez is a Genetics professor of the University of Valencia. He defended his dissertation at the Institute of Cytological Research with a work about the urea cycle in which he studied its regulation, new functions and pathogenesis of its alterations. After a brief postdoctoral stay at the Institute of Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology of Strasbourg, he specialized in Immunology at the 12 de Octubre Hospital of Madrid. In 2002 he worked as a researcher of the National Health System at the Clinical University Hospital of Valencia and afterwards at his Foundation. Since 2011 he is an associated researcher at INCLIVA.
He had work for a long time in the characterization of monogenetic pathologies like congenital errors of the urea cycle and in primary immunodeficiency like the Hyper IgM syndrome, ataxia-telangiectasia, Nijmegen breakage syndrome, or Papillon-Lefevre, among others. Recently, he has been working in the molecular and functional characterization of patients with a chromosomic disease, inverted duplicated chromosome 15 syndrome (Idic ─15). Since 2005, his main interest and research area is the genetics of a complex disease like postmenopausal osteoporosis and the functional characterization of the detected genetic variants. He is also particularly interested in the recognition of miRNAs as predictive biomarkers for fragility bone structure and severe arthrosis.
He has published over 100 articles ─most of them in international journals─ and 14 book chapters. He has participated in more than 25 research projects; 10 of them are research, development and innovation efforts (6 of them as main researcher) and 2 international projects. He participates as an assessor for journals like Bone, Scientific Reports, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, The American Journal of Pathology and BBA – Molecular Cell Research. He is an assessor for the agencies ANEP, AEI, ACSUCYL, Regional Ministry for Health of the Andalusian Government, Basque Government and Ministry of Science and Innovation.
