Dr. Rubén D Artero Allepuz
Principal Investigator
Research Group on Human Translational Genomics
Presentation
Dr. Artero is Professor of Genetics at the University of Valencia, where he studied Biochemistry at the Faculty of Biology and obtained his Ph.D. He completed a six-year postdoctoral stay at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York (www.mskcc.org), where he investigated the molecular bases of myogenic differentiation in Drosophila, returning to Spain in 2002 with a contract from the prestigious Ramón y Cajal program of the science and innovation ministry.
His research focuses on the analysis of the pathophysiological mechanisms of Myotonic Dystrophy (DM), Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMDD2); always from an applied vision of research, covering both the repositioning of drugs, as well as the development of therapeutic oligonucleotides and drug targeting methods, using for this Drosophila, and cell and murine models. His studies on the functions of miRNAs, which contribute to the process of muscle atrophy in the aforementioned diseases and also occurs in cancer-induced cachexia, are of special relevance. He has participated in 75 scientific publications, has been academic editor of the journals PLOS ONE and Scientific Reports, and is a regular contributor to other international journals. He has directed 15 doctoral theses. He maintains national and international collaborations and is part of a group of excellence Prometeo and the Biotecmed University Institute.
On the innovative side, he is an inventor on 19 patents and is co-founder of the spin-off company ARTHEx Biotech, which is developing the first antimiR drug as a therapy for myotonic dystrophy.
